Historically native Americans & Africans, later ousted by the people with white skin & troubled by the same were finally recognised with a tradition known as Black History Month.

The month is all about celebration of what Blacks or Negro have achieved all those years they were oppressed or before. Their achievements were first being celebrated for one week of the year but now its being celebrated widely for whole month of February every year.

Every year countries all over the world, from United States of America to Canada, from United Kingdom to African countries, and some other countries in Europe celebrate a month to honor the achievements of that deprived race of the world.

It all started in September 1915, when a Harvard trained historian Carter G. Woodson & a minister named Jesse E. Moorland founded an association named Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) which primary work was to promote achievements by Black Americans & people of African descent.

The association sponsored a National Negro week in February, 1926. That initiative inspired many nationwide & recognised as national event. Same association is now known as Association of Study of African American Life & History (ASALH).

The tradition of celebrating one week was followed over decades till in 1960’s as most credit Civil Rights Movement & awareness movements for evolution of “Negro History Week” into “Black History Month”.

Later in 1976, United States President Gerald officially recognised Black History Month & called it a month when people across the country will honour the neglected accomplishment of Black Americans.

Today every February people all over the globe honor the contributions & legacy of  Africans Americans from every walk of life. Black professionals, workers, scholars everyone is being celebrated and honored in this precious month of recognition.

It kicks off from the United States, and then it spreads across the globe as month passes. It is widely celebrated at academics, i.e in schools & colleges, universities, activists organisations, and community clubs. Celebrations goes on for days & weeks till 1st March, when the auspicious month of February ends.

Every year there is a designated theme to Black History Month. Its a legacy, a tradition to follow. In 2022, in wake of ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, theme is about the frontline servants in hospitals. The theme “Black Health & Wellness” in a broader sense is all about recognising the contributions of not only medical practitioners & Black scholars but also midwives, birth workers, herbalists & medical specialists etc. Its all about honoring the efforts & contributions of Black people in health sector.

With Black Lives Matter going on, hopes of Black people have reached all time high. As many countries have started to give due shares of opportunities to Blacks in all walks. Not only their contributions to the world, but also their existence started to be respected all over.
